Places to visit on holiday in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

A popular place to visit in Sogn og Fjordane is the Jostedal glacier, which, at 487km2 is the largest of its type in the north of Europe. The glacier sits in four of the county’s municipalities, namely Luster, Jolster, Stryn and Balestrand.

Luster itself is a popular destination with visitors, as it contains a number of other stunning glaciers, gushing waterfalls and breathtaking fjords – essentially being a miniature version of everything that makes this part of Norway so special. Also within Luster is the Jotunheim National Park, which is rich in flora and fauna and a great place for wildlife spotting.

The far west of the county is marked by the Ustveer lighthouse in Solund. This area of Sogn og Fjordane is well worth a visit, as it is the only municipality in the county that is made up purely of islands – making it popular with those on fishing trips and outdoor sports enthusiasts.

There are regional variations within the Sogn og Fjordane region, but generally speaking the temperatures in the county are mild during summer months and cold (but not often below freezing) during winter months. Expect medium to high levels of rainfall at all times of the year, especially between September and December.

Flights to Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

Sogn og Fjordane has a number of small airports, but they only receive internal flights. A common option for UK visitors is to fly to Bergen Airport (BGO), Flesland, then take an internal flight to one of these local destinations, or make the remainder of the journey by car. Bergen Airport is roughly 160km from the heart of the Sogn og Fjordane region.
