Things to do in Sozopol in Bulgaria

There are a fantastic range of restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs in Sozopol, serving everything from traditional cuisine to international dishes, but all at prices much cheaper than many international resorts. Just touring the old town, carving your path through the wooden houses and ancient cobbled streets is a pleasure, especially when you stop at a timeless little café and indulge in a plate of midi, (locally raised mussels) which are an absolute delicacy. The churches of The Holy Virgin and St Zosim cannot be missed and there are a great range of galleries and museums to explore.

However, the beaches are of huge appeal to visitors. There are two beaches in Sozopol, lined with golden sands and perfect for both lazy days stretched out in the sun and for more active breaks, swimming, sailing and kayaking. A little to the south of Sozopol’s beaches is Dyuni Beach, an upmarket beach backed by a stunning area of marshland known as the Arkutino Swamp, where floating lilies decorate the water, and wildlife thrives.

Touring the coastline, whether on foot or from the sea by kayak, small boat or ‘boat taxi’, is a wonderful experience, especially if you head southwards towards the fjord like bays and cliffs of the Bulgarian coast. There are some amazing views to see, especially from some of the dramatic sea caves found among the bays and inlets.

The city of Bourgas (Burgas) has a huge amount to see and do. Burgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, and is filled with museums, galleries and attractions of the highest quality. Folklore is particularly rich here, much of which is explained in the International Folklore Festival in Bourgas. The saltwater lagoons and national parks that surround the city are also well worth exploration on foot.
