One of the most popular, the ‘Wood Route’ runs through dense forests, and takes in many wood-related attractions along the way, including the Reitermuhle wood mill and the wooden Mur footbridge – known as the ‘Gateway to the Mur Valley’.
For those who visit during the coldest months, accommodation in Stadl also offers close and easy access to the excellent ski resorts in the Marau district. Kreischberg is the nearest option, just 6km away, and is extremely popular with snowboarders. More extensive skiing can be found just 30 minutes away in the heart of the Murau region, with far less crowds far than many other ski resorts in the country.
Even if you head to Stadl for more of a relaxing break that an active holiday, you will not be disappointed. The scenery is stunning, the local food is both hearty and delicious, and the local people have a reputation as extremely friendly and welcoming. Depending on how far out you are prepared to venture, there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding region. The historic town of Murau – the capital of the region of the same name – is just 16km away, and both the Italian and Slovenian borders can be reached within under an hour.

Stadl and the surrounding area have a climate of warm summers and cold winters. Summer high’s can reach around 20C, making the region ideal for climbing, hiking and mountain biking. December, January and February are the oldest months, when the temperature plummets below 0C, with plenty of snow to keep skiers and snowboarders happy.
Flights to Stadl, Austria
Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is a small but expanding airport situated 80km south east of Stadl, and represents the best option for getting to the chalet accommodation in the area. Only one airline flies direct from the UK (Ryanair from London Stansted), so be sure to book flights well in advance. Salzburg Airport, 110km north-west of Stadl, is an alternative option.
