Sometimes referred to as Tarascon du Rhone, Tarascon is situated 23km south of Avignon, on the east bank of the Rhone River in the Bouches-du-Rhone region of Provence, France. The name Tarascon comes from that of a mythological monster that was said to live here, and the legend remains strong with a museum and local festival dedicated to the man-eating creature. A mythological monster known as the Taratin (or Tarasque) was said to have lived in Tarascon at the beginning of the 1st Century, and a series of novels were written about it in the late 1800’s. The result of this is a museum in the town that is dedicated to the Taratin, and a festival held in its honour every June, making this time of the year a particularly interesting one in which to visit. Another museum of particular interest is the Souleiado, which exhibits the Provencal fabric still made in the area and exported all over the world.

There are several sites of historical interest within the town centre. These include the 12th Century Collegiate Church of St. Martha, the 15th Century Medieval Castle and the 17th Century Town Hall (which has a Taratin sculpture on its roof). Touring these buildings, along with the several others within the town centre can easily fill two days for any visitor and allow them to get a true feel for this historical town.

Beaucaire is located on the opposite side of the Rhone River from Tarascon, and as a result the two are often classed as a single town. Beaucaire is the home of more historical buildings, the ruins of a 13th Century castle, and a popular July festival, which incorporates a procession, various concerts and several bullfights.

As well as crossing the river and heading into Beaucaire, visitors to Tarascon have many options if they decide to explore the surrounding area. As well as the many towns and villages that line the banks of the Rhone, a visit to Avignon is a must. The city is one of great historical and archaeological interest, but also has good shopping and dining and offers a good night out.

The climate of Tarascon is similar to that of many European towns and cities, with warm summers and cooler winters. Though rainfall could not be described as heavy at any time of the year, it is recommended that visitors take suitable clothing to cater for all eventualities.

Avignon Airport is 22km from Tarascon, and receives regular flights from Exeter and Southampton (Flybe), and Edinburgh and Leeds Bradford (Jet2). Some of these are seasonal flights, and those travelling in winter could use Nimes Airport as an alternative, as it is a similar distance from Tarascon.
