Ploermel 56800 - Morbihan, Southern Brittany, France - Discovery the Ploermel area of Morbihan
Ploermel is a growing town virtually on the crossroads between Rennes [Capital of Brittany] and Vannes [Coastal walled city]. It is part of the Morbihan area and enjoys the climate from the Gulf Stream and is only one hour away from the many beaches of the Gulf of Morbihan. Ploermel is also known as The City of Dukes due to its many surrounding chateaux [including the nearby Josselin chateau] and its lake, man-made by the medieval dukes by flooding a village and valley. The Lac au Duc has a man-made beach and safe swimming area, watersports hire and lessons, trampolining, volleyball and table tennis areas as well as a kid’s swimming pool with tubular slides. Around the lake area are cafes and ice-cream bars too.
Ploermel itself was once a walled city until 'friendly fire' in the 2nd World War destroyed much of its walls. It is now half medieval and half modern. It has a market on Fridays and many niche shops, including clothing and shoes, plus the usual banks. There are many restaurants and bars, all children friendly and all recommended. The town is spoilt for choice for supermarkets too as there are 3 large relatively new stores, SuperU, Intermarche and Leclerc as well as the smaller Lidl, Netto and Mutant stores are all around the edges of the town itself. A new Cinema Complex and 10-pin bowling alley [with excellent restaurant] adds to the delights of the town. Not to forget McDonalds!!
Easy access by good fast quiet roads to the coastal areas including Carnac, La Baule and the busy thriving capital of Rennes make this a superb central location whatever the weather.
In the summer months Ploermel hosts live bands - free - in its streets and squares, usually on a Thursday in August but part of the Festival of Music throughout the area in early July through to late August too.
