Terni, Umbria has a number of historical sites around its well-preserved old town centre, including the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre which is believed to date back to 32BC. There are also three Romanesque churches, a 17th century cathedral and a restored Roman gate which was one of four ancient entrances to the city.

Just ten minutes’ drive away is Cascata delle Marmore (Marmore’s Falls) – the tallest man-made waterfall in the world. Here you can try your hand at adventure sports such as kayaking and rafting, or simply stand on the observatory platform and enjoy the spectacular views of the water crashing down from a height of 541ft. The falls consist of three sections which are turned on and off at certain times of the day, subject to demand.

Bars, shops, supermarkets and cafes can all be found in the centre of Terni, and the town has all of the amenities you would expect of one that is home to over 100,000 people. A Terni spa is a great place to head after a long day of sightseeing, and with several to choose from within a short distance of eachother, your every whim can be catered for.

Whilst staying in self-catering accommodation in Terni you will likely decide to head out and explore the beautiful region of Umbria. Perugia is the capital and can be reached in an hour on a good day, providing you with ample opportunity for exploring this artists’ haven. Closer to home, an enjoyable day can be spent visiting Terni’s neighbours Narni (11km) and San Gemini (16km). The use of a hire car is recommended is this rural area of Italy.
