Totnes - Possibly the Funkiest Town in England???

Totnes is a charming town whose high street is populated almost entirely by independent retailers. What a relief to not be stumbling over the ubiquitous chains of coffee shops and mobile phone shops which dog almost every other high street in the land! And where else would it be possible to buy organic meat and vegetables, handmade shoes, quality furniture, pictures and fine art and a willow coffin, all in the same high street?

With its more than generous helping of "alternative therapy" practitioners Totnes undoubtedly qualifies as one of the leading contenders for the "Funkiest Town in England" competition which will make it appeal to visitors of all ages but in particular teenagers. With its castle atop the hill, the beautiful arched clock tower spanning the high street and the meandering Dart River running through the town, Totnes is a jewel.

There are a number of excellent restaurants cafes and bistros, some enjoying beautiful views over the river. But don't miss the fantastic tea shops in the high street which serve some of the best cream teas in Devon.

The town also acts as a wonderful base from which to explore much of Devon. Being strategically located just off the A38, it enjoys easy access to the fabulous beaches of the South Hams (East Portlemouth, Bigbury, Slapton, Blackpool Sands etc) but also benefits from being close to Dartmoor and only 1.5 hours from the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan.

The immediate area also plays host to some of the most beautiful countryside and attractions in Devon including Sharpham Vineyard, Dartington Hall, Dartmouth, Coleton Fishacre, Buckfastliegh, the South Devon Railway and Paignton Zoo with its Living Coasts attraction at nearby Torquay.

Horse riding, mountain biking, hill walking, canoeing, fishing, surfing, ballooning and sailing are all available in the area or for those who just want to chill out, take a good bottle of wine and a picnic and just sit in some of the most glorious countryside you will ever wish to see and listen to the ...........silence!

Happy holiday!
