Places to visit on holiday in West Coast Sri Lanka

On the middle of the west coast, Colombo is the most populated city in Sri Lanka, and is a busy and bustling multi-cultural area that combines modern facilities with cultural and historic attractions. Some of the city’s main draws include the Colombo Museum, the Murugan Hindu temple, Viharamahadevi Park and Gallery Island.

Those looking for a more relaxing base should head further down the coast, as this is also where some of the finest beaches are. Bentota and Beruwela are where you find most of the tourist accommodation, and great water sports can be found further south in the ‘hippy’ town of Hikkaduwa.

Weather in West Coast Sri Lanka

The climate in Sri Lanka is one of relentless heat, and one best enjoyed sipping a cold drink on a beach. Temperatures rarely drop below 25C, and are more commonly around the 30C mark. The driest months are February, March and April, but visitors should expect rain at some point during their stay. Don’t begrudge it though – it is after all the reason for the country’s lush rainforests and roaming green landscapes.

Flights to West Coast Sri Lanka

Bandaranaike International Airport is Sri Lanka’s only international airport, but is conveniently situated for holidays to the island’s west coast. Situated 35km north of Colombo, the airport receives direct flights in summer from London Gatwick though Thomson Airways. Visitors making the journey outside of peak season may be required to change planes.
