Make a holiday rental cottage or accommodation in Wiltshire your home away from home

Wiltshire is a wonderfully diverse county, with lively market towns found in patches throughout the famous downs, rolling hills and wide open countryside. Located in the south of England, Wiltshire is a largely rural region where you cannot fail to relax and slow your pace of life a little, at least for the week or two in which you are staying in your Wiltshire accommodation! How ever you wish to spend your holiday, walking the downs, investigating the rich history and culture or simply living a life of luxury on the golf courses and fine Wiltshire restaurants, you will always find plenty of top class options from self catering Wiltshire accommodation.

Things to do on a Wiltshire holiday

Wiltshire is steeped in history. There are some staggering ancient sites, many of which are the most important and celebrated in the whole of England. The World Heritage Site at Stonehenge is one of the most famous in the world, and Wiltshire’s attractions don’t stop there. The stone circles of Avebury are the focus of a range of ancient sites, from the West Kennet Long Barrow to Sillbury Hill. Salisbury Cathedral is one of the most beautiful in the country, and boasts the largest spire in England. If you have the time to visit Salisbury Cathedral from your Wiltshire accommodation, make sure you go in, as the original script of the Magna Carta is displayed in the Charter House here.

The great chalk downs, rivers and canal routes make Wiltshire a haven for outdoor activities too. There are endless walks to be found, cycle routes to be conquered and fantastic bridle paths to be explored on Wiltshire holidays, many of which take you past a range of Wiltshire’s most famous (and a few of the less well known) white horses which are cut painstakingly into the chalk hills. There is a huge network of bridle paths, footpaths and cycle ways in Wiltshire, and some wonderful rural Wiltshire public houses in which to have a hearty meal and refreshing drink.

Wiltshire has its fair share of top golf courses too. Wiltshire’s golf courses range from quite par 3 courses to long, undulating and highly challenging championship courses like those in Marlborough, Salisbury and Chippenham.

Places to visit on a Wiltshire holiday

Salisbury and the surrounding area is a favourite region in which to take Wiltshire accommodation. The close-by attractions of Stonehenge and Salisbury Plain are important attractions, but the quaint shopping streets, soaring spire of the Cathedral and the top class Wiltshire restaurants mean Wiltshire accommodation in the town are highly sought after.

Marlborough is another charming old town, filled with cafes, little shops and charming townhouses which make the perfect base for any exploration of the downs, whether on foot, bicycle, horseback or canal barge.

Weather in Wiltshire

Summer days on the downs can be magnificent, with the sun beaming down, and temperatures in the 20’s (˚C) producing a lush covering of vegetation below your feet. During the winter months, conditions can of course be variable, but even then, as the sun rises low over the hilltops, gleaming off the morning dew, you could not ask for finer scenery.

Travel to Wiltshire

Located in the centre of southern England and well connected to London and Wales by the M4 corridor, accommodation in Wiltshire is very easy to reach. Train and rail networks are extensive, and there are plenty of car hire companies in the larger towns including Swindon and Salisbury.
